Stop Letting Chores Steal Time from Your Family
- Chuck Johnson
Ever feel like you’re constantly juggling? One minute, you're deep in work, the next, you're rushing through dinner, and doing the house chores. You want to be there for your kids and your wife, but household responsibilities just won’t stop piling up. Last week we talked about communicating with our spouse regarding the workload at home. This week let’s talk about dealing with those chores appropriately to free some time for the family.
Here’s the secret: Streamline your household duties so you’re not drowning in them. Here is how to do it!
1. Simplify and Systemize
Most of us handle chores reactively—clean up messes as they happen, fix what’s urgent, and push off what’s not. Instead, try batching and scheduling like you would for work tasks.
Set a daily 15-minute family “reset” where everyone helps clean up before bed.
Meal prep or plan ahead—knowing what’s for dinner each night eliminates last-minute stress.
Automate errands: Use subscriptions for household essentials, schedule recurring grocery deliveries, or delegate to a task app.
When I finally set up a system for laundry (instead of scrambling every few days), I stopped wasting time on it—and suddenly had more evenings free for backyard baseball with my boys.
2. Delegate Like a CEO
You don’t run your business alone—so why try to run your household that way? Your kids need responsibility, and your spouse isn’t a mind-reader.
Assign age-appropriate chores and make them non-negotiable (bonus: this teaches work ethic).
If it’s within the budget, outsource where you can—lawn care, deep cleaning, or meal services can buy back time.
Have a weekly “family sync” where you and your spouse divide up tasks ahead of time. Our sync is on Sunday evening where we map out the week and talk through responsibilities that are not already assigned.
The first time I put my older kids in charge of unloading the dishwasher and taking out the trash, I felt guilty—like I was slacking. But you know what happened? They stepped up. And I didn’t have to spend my evenings cleaning up while they played. In fact, it has given me time to go for a walk with my Wife while they finish up the kitchen!
